Design and work execution competition for restoration and enhancement of the “Passetto di Borgo”

Rome (RM), Italy

Studies

Description

The competition aimed at the restoration and functional enhancement of the “Passetto di Borgo” in Lungotevere Castello, with the main objective of expanding the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo with an additional evocative itinerary.

In order to address the critical issues of the visitor route, mainly related to safety and architectural barriers, the response to the requests of the competition has been a project with its own visible identity, non-invasive and easily removable to restore the original structure.

The project proposal consists of the restoration of the pre-existing structures and architectural surfaces and the creation of paths, which together allow better use, evacuation in case of emergency and the overcoming of architectural barriers. The project also proposed the construction of a new independent access point to the walkway in Piazza della Città Leonina, of a staircase inside the Tower in Piazza della Città Leonina, of a balcony on Via dei Corridori and the furnishing of the exterior and interior.

The use of corten steel and a minimal contemporary architectural language in all parts of the project contributes to its contextualization, without improperly interfering with the historical architecture, clearly marking the difference between what is new and pre-existing.

The staircase is designed to guarantee maximum ‘transparency’, thanks to steps and parapets that are permeable to light, ensuring maximum natural lighting.
