Competition of ideas for the urban redevelopment of the Nicotera Marina waterfront

Nicotera (VV), Italy
Concorso di idee per la riqualificazione urbana del lungomare di Nicotera Marina

Studies

Description

The urban redevelopment of the Nicotera Marina seafront takes place through a unified strategy to consolidate together the different parts identified by the project, divided into four thematic areas.

The pedestrian promenade
The design solution stems from the desire to lay out a series of interventions that are capable of absorbing masses of seasonal tourists within an urban structure of limited dimensions, without producing imbalances in the urban framework of the town center.

The scenic machines
Open spaces along the seafront of Nicotera will host a series of architectures in wood. These will have an ambiguous role, between temporary and permanent, marking a liminal space straddling between built and natural environment. With simple but decisive forms, these structures, that are effectively scenic machines, are intimately linked to the linear promenade which works as the connector of a procession of new urban centralities that turn Nicotera and its waterfront into a city of events.

The dune and the beach system
This delicate ecosystem, filter between the shoreline and the urbanized nucleus, is currently strongly compromised and saturated by the permanent oversized structures of the beach resorts. The recovery and restoration of the dune Mediterranean shrub, an important ecosystem typical of this part of the Calabrian coast, requires a comprehensive rethinking of the current model of economic exploitation of the Nicotera waterfront. For this reason, the project proposal envisages a scenario in which the original ecosystem and touristic activities can be better integrated together.
