Description

The work involved the architectural, structural, and plant design execution and the construction supervision for the energy refurbishment and expansion of a residential building in Rome. The building, constructed around 1950, initially had a total covered area of 576 square meters. Following the expansion, which included the construction of an underground garage and an elevation on the roof terrace, this area increased to 964 square meters.

The expansion work was structurally very complex as it required interventions both below and above an existing inhabited building. For this reason, very advanced technologies and procedures were implemented, along with continuous monitoring to control the response of the existing structures to the stresses induced by the highly invasive interventions planned in the project.

The energy refurbishment was comprehensive, affecting both the building’s external envelope and all its systems, to significantly improve the building’s energy performance. The project also aimed to take advantage of the work to update the architectural appearance of an otherwise completely anonymous building, particularly by using functional solutions such as solar shading and by strongly intervening on the facades. This involved the use of innovative and energy-efficient materials and technologies, such as the micro-ventilated facade, as well as modernizing the design while respecting the original geometries and openings.

Therefore, it was a pilot project that, taking advantage of the energy needs, also aimed to qualitatively improve the building’s architecture. This principle, if systematically applied to the existing anonymous and modest building stock, can make a useful contribution to the urban environment’s refurbishment without using public economic resources.
